A Brief History
dms_intro.htmlDiscovery
Middle School, located in east Central Florida, was conceived by Associate
Superintendent David Soujourner who believed a ninth-grade modular center
could be adapted to fit the middle-school concept.
By August of 1990,
this unique idea was approved by the School Board of Orange County at a savings
to the taxpayers of over 10 million dollars. Thus, middle school "DD"
was born.
In October 1990 the bulldozers arrived at the east end of
University High School's property,
and the mammoth operation of removing 250,000 yards of soil from the site
prior to pouring foundations began.
Mr. Hugh Harris was named principal
of DMS and began organizing the curriculum, facility, and personnel needs of the
school. He hired Mr. Ernie Larsen and Mrs. Ruth Ford to assist him in the monumental
task of joining together the various segments into one cohesive unit.
Discovery
opened with 1026 students. Today, the student population has soared
to over 1750. New portables
have been added to as a temporary solution to relieve crowding. With no end
to the growth in sight, Discovery will be relocating to its new, permanent building
sometime in 1996.
The new Discovery Middle School will start being built in October 1995, and will be finished on November 1, 1996. Discovery Middle School will be a two-story facility and will be built out of brick. The school will be built for 1275 students at a cost of $16 million.
