Nigeria
My name is Abby Habib, and I'm an eighth grade student of Ligon Middle School. I'm
twelve years old and I just moved to the United states a year ago.
I moved here from Nigeria to meet my mum, who came here eight years ago.
When I first moved here, things seemed a little strange to me because there are a lot of things that are here that are not in Nigeria. I also thought I could not make any friends because I knew I didn't have anything in common with people over here, and our behaviors are different. We also have different ways of expressing things. There are many beautiful things here, but still I think about Nigeria. You know, I've lived there my whole life, so I can't help thinking of it.
Right now, things are not all that good in Nigeria, but sometimes I still think I'm with the people I used to be with before I came here. I miss a lot of things about Nigeria, things
like its sounds...the sounds of people I used to hear every day. I also miss all my cousins and
some of my relatives that are there, and especially my dad. He's the one I'll never stop
missing. Actually, he might have held me back and not let me come here, but to
my surprise, he was eager for me to come. That was because he had tried to come many times but couldn't. Now that I'm here, he was so happy that I could do what he didn't have a chance to do. He allowed me to come meet my mum.
America is nice too, and I don't want to leave it now. I'm glad I made some really good friends. One thing is that, when you're moving
some place that is new to you, just expect the best of it and you'll have a lot of fun like I'm doing right here in the United States. It's really fun over here and I'm not leaving
for some years until I go on a visit to Nigeria.
Sincerely,
Abby Habib
