Interview with Mom From Germany

by Brett Hammond-age 12

The other day I interviewed my mom to find out a little about where she came from. I asked her if she remembered her home town and any special things that were happening there at that time. This is what I discovered...

Brett: What do you miss about Germany?
Mom: I was so young when I moved I don't remember much of anything.

Brett: Can you still speak the language fluently?
Mom: No I lost it a long time ago.

Brett: Do you have any relatives still there? If so where?
Mom: Yes, I have a few. They live in Berlin, Germany.

Brett: Do you remember your home town?
Mom: I didn't remember the town until I went there when I was older.

Brett: Are there any interesting things you remember from there?
Mom: World War II was ending when I was born.

Brett: Why did you move?
Mom: My mother married an American solder.

Brett: Were there any problems on the way over?
Mom: I came on a ship and there were no real problems that I know of.

Brett: Do you use any of the customs from that country?
Mom: Only one. I have my children call my parents "Oma" and "Opa", which means Grandmother and Grandfather in German. Other than that I am totally Americanized.
